Our Curriculum

At Belhaven Nursery School, we provide a co-educational and culturally diverse learning environment where every child is valued as an individual. Our aim is to create a bright, busy, secure, happy and stimulating environment where children feel safe, confident and excited to learn through play, exploration and discovery.

Our curriculum is guided by Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) and is designed to support the development of the whole child. Through a broad, balanced and play-based approach, we provide experiences that nurture children’s curiosity, creativity, independence and confidence, while developing the skills they need for both life and learning.

Learning Through Play

Play is at the heart of everything we do. Through carefully planned experiences and opportunities to explore their interests, children are encouraged to ask questions, solve problems, communicate their ideas, develop relationships and make sense of the world around them.

We support children’s learning and development across the key areas of:

Health and Wellbeing – developing confidence, resilience, independence, relationships and an understanding of how to keep ourselves healthy and safe.
Literacy and English – developing communication, listening and talking skills, enjoying stories, rhymes and songs, and beginning to explore early reading and writing.
Numeracy and Mathematics – developing an understanding of numbers, patterns, shapes, measures and mathematical thinking through meaningful, practical experiences.

These areas are closely connected to the wider Curriculum for Excellence experiences and outcomes, allowing children to develop skills across a range of learning experiences rather than as separate subjects.

Preparing for the Next Step

Our play-based approach helps children develop the skills, confidence and independence they need as they move on to primary school. We work closely with families and support each child’s individual learning and development, helping to make the transition to their chosen primary school smooth, positive and confident.

Above all, we want our children to leave Belhaven Nursery as successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors — ready to embrace their next steps with enthusiasm and curiosity.
